For much of human history, many people believed that the Earth was flat. This belief persisted until the 15th century when explorers such as Christopher Columbus demonstrated that the Earth was indeed round. 2. For centuries, it was believed that living organisms could arise spontaneously from non-living matter, and that disease was caused by "bad air" or miasma. This belief persisted until the 19th century when Louis Pasteur, a French microbiologist, demonstrated the role of microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, in causing diseases. 3. Alchemy was an ancient practice that aimed to turn base metals into gold and find the philosopher's stone, a mythical substance believed to have magical properties. Alchemy was eventually replaced by modern chemistry, which is based on empirical evidence and scientific method.
