What is now known as the Arab occupation of Palestine began long before the Islamic period. For many centuries, possibly even before the beginning of the Early Bronze Age, there had been both trade and movement of people's between southern Arabia and the Mediterranean coast of Palestine. These semi-nomadic people's came to be called Arabs, and in about the 7th century C.E. a religious movement under the prophet Mohammed brought them together under the banner of Islam.
