MARCUS P. NEVIUS is an associate professor of history at the University of Missouri. His scholarship has received support from the the Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary, the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, and the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon. He has also published an article in History Compass and several book reviews in the Journal of African American History, Journal of Southern History, and H-Civil War.
