Gary W. Gallagher is John L. Nau III Professor of History at the University of Virginia and the author or editor of over of forty books on the history of the Civil War, including Becoming Confederates: Paths to a New National Identity. Stephen Cushman is Robert C. Taylor Professor of English at the University of Virginia. He is a prolific poet and the author of several works of non-fiction, including Belligerent Muse: Five Northern Writers and How They Shaped Our Understanding of the Civil War.
