Tom Clancy, geb. 1948, arbeitete lange Jahre als Versicherungsagent. Eine Meuterei auf einem sowjetischen Zerstörer regte Clancy dazu an, seinen ersten Thriller, 'Jagd auf Roter Oktobe', zu schreiben. Das Buch wurde auf Anhieb ein internationaler Erfolg, der sich in der Verfilmung mit Sean Connery in der Hauptrolle wiederholte.
