Bevor sich Berlie Doherty als Autorin niederließ, arbeitete sie zunächst als Lehrerin für den Schulfunk und in der Erwachsenenbildung. Neben ihren Romanen für Kinder und Jugendliche schreibt sie auch für Erwachsene.
Verschiedene Bühnenstücke sowie Arbeiten für Rundfunk und Fernsehen runden ihre schriftstellerische Tätigkeit ab. Für 'Dear Nobody' erhielt Berlie Doherty 1991 die Carnegie Medal, die höchste britische Auszeichnung.
