Clay Art Therapy and Spirituality

Clay art therapy inspires awakening. Earth-infused and experiential methods are relational, self-reflective, and transformational. Clay therapy provides documented outcomes in healing, anxiety and stress reduction, trauma and recovery, as well as in reframing beliefs and identity. The approach builds skills in daily living and relationships. Seeking a holistic perspective to inform clay therapy, this project follows decades of research into the healing of trauma in minority cultures revealing the hidden power of spirituality as meaning making. A person-centred method reframes minority identity within a postmodern psychotherapy. Experiential methods in therapeutic art-as-life and life-as-art embraces scientific evolutionary theories of development, cooperation, ascent, and convergence. Clay-based psychotherapy is informed by culturally infused methods reflecting on western, minority, and disability experiences. We explore our therapy studio productions as well as the works of contemporary sculptor Andrea Martini, and the 15th century works in terracotta by Andrea della Robbia. Our approach provides for opportunities to reflect on the nature of clay art therapy in healing, capacity and skill building, identity formation, and in facilitating transcendent outcomes.

Autor

Joseph Randolph Bowers AKA Kisiku Sa'qawei Paq'tism completed a PhD Health Psychotherapy in Australia, and later a Doctor of Divinity in Clay Art Therapy. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity in Franciscan Spirituality. His Canadian studies began with a Bachelor of Arts in Spirituality and Philosophy, and later a Master of Education in Counselling. Joseph Randolph has accomplishments in music, poetry, painting, and ceramic art. There is little doubt that his professional work is prolific with over 250 works consisting of editorials, scholarly projects, and many books. His work is honoured in the collections of the Tepi'ketuek Mi'kmaw Archives founded by Professor Marie Battiste and the University of Saskatchewan, and in a Special Collection held by the Cape Breton University Mi'kmaq Resource Centre. Dr Bowers has been a long time Invited Scholar of the Centre for World Indigenous Studies. He is among the founders of the Australian Counselling profession and is an Honorary of the Australian Counselling Association, a clinical member of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine, and a Certified Registered Behaviour Support Specialist with the Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Commission.
