Mariupol city is one of the main industrial cities of Ukraine. High concentration of large industrial enterprises has resulted in serious problems with air, soil and water pollution. These problems represent a threat to the well-being of its citizens and a major obstacle to developing tourism and attracting foreign investment. The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany managed to bring many stakeholders of the regions together to elaborate a master-plan "Clean Air for Mariupol". The main goals of the project were to identify the measures to improve the quality of environment and reduce pollutants emissions and to elaborate a list of measures to protect the population of Mariupol against the consequences of air, soil and water pollution. The expert group was able to elaborate five fields of action: to collect and assess information on air pollution with fine particles and organic pollutants; to establish a system of environmental monitoring on soil contamination withheavy metals; to establish Environmental Analytical Laboratory; to elaborate and present the community with environmental report; to share experience with other industrial cities.
