High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Climatic Research Unit email controversy (dubbed "Climategate" in the media) began in November 2009 with the Internet leak of thousands of emails and other documents stolen from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU). According to the university, the emails and documents were obtained through the hacking of a server. The Norfolk Constabulary is conducting a criminal investigation of the server breach. The emails prompted allegations by climate change skeptics, and in turn widespread publicity in the media, raising questions whether the emails showed scientific misconduct and evasion of Freedom of Information requests by the CRU. The UEA and CRU rejected the allegations and a number of academics, climate change researchers, and independent reports found that most or all of the allegations were baseless. Three independent reviews into the affair were initiated in the UK, two of which have now concluded. During thereviews, the CRU's director, Professor Phil Jones, stood aside from his post.
