PRRS has now become an endemic disease in the global swine production, except for several countries, including Sweden, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Australia claimed to be free of this disease. India was considered as free from the disease till 27-06-13, when the Government of India has reported the first outbreak of PRRS in pig population of Mizoram, to OIE. The north-eastern region of India, comprising of 8 States namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim consists 27.94% of the total pig population of India. Pig husbandry plays an important role in the socio-economic development of this NER of India, including Mizoram. Detection of PRRSV of genotype II, which has caused heavy mortality in pig population of Mizoram during March 2013 to April 2013, is a matter of great concern for the entire pig population of NER, India. A thorough and systematic study on surveillance, epidemiology and diagnosis, is essential to know the magnitudeof the disease & also for designing strategy to control & containment of PRRS in NER, India.
