Hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HA] is used in many biomedical applications including and joint or total replacements & bone substitute. Due to its structural and chemical similarities to human bone mineral, it is excellent material for bone and teeth. HA enhances growth of bone tissue. HA proves to be highly bioactive and biocompatible but its usage is limited to non- load bearing application because of its poor mechanical properties (fatigue properties). HA coatings have been demonstrated to improve implant to bone bonding and allow a more natural integration of the metallic substrates.
