John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922) was an American author, humorist, editor, and satirist, best known for his creation of the 'Bangsian' genre of fantasy literature which situates famous literary characters in the afterlife. Born and raised in Yonkers, New York, Bangs attended Columbia College (now Columbia University) where he earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree. His early career saw him in various editorial roles including working for Harper's Magazine, Life, and Puck, some of which were leading humor publications of the time. Bangs's writing is characterized by its wit, whimsy, and the playful application of satire. In 'Cobwebs from a Library Corner' (1899), Bangs weaves together a collection of his light verse, showcasing his adeptness at humorous poetry that twinkles with clever rhyme and meter. This work, like many of his other writings, demonstrates his skill in turning an astute and comedic eye to everyday occurrences and the minutiae of life. Throughout his prolific career, Bangs penned numerous novels, including his well-known series of books set in 'The House-Boat on the Styx', wherein historical and fictional characters interact in the afterlife. Though his popularity waned after his death, Bangs's influence can still be seen in the world of humorous fantasy fiction, and his works continue to entertain readers with their timeless humor and inventive scenarios.
