It is a grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Cockermouth Castle is currently (2007) owned by Pamela Lady Egremont.Castles have played an important military, economic and social role in Great Britain and Ireland since their introduction following the Norman invasion of England in 1066.
