In the second edition of this widely respected work, Bruffee focuses his argument on the need to change college and university education from top to bottom, and on the need to understand knowledge differently in order to accomplish that change. Several chapters, including the one addressing collaborative learning and computers, have been throughly revised, and three new chapters have been added: on differences between collaborative learning and cooperative learning; on literary study and teaching literature; and on graduate education.

Kenneth A. Bruffee is professor of English and director of the Honors Academy and the Scholars Program at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. He is the author of A Short Course in Writing and Elegiac Romance: Cultural Change and Loss of the Hero in Modern Fiction. He has conducted workshops on collaborative learning at colleges and universities throughout the country.
