With international educational evaluations, aspects of teaching and research in university teacher training, education after Bologna and a shortage of teachers, teacher training has become the subject of controversial debate. Experts, evaluations and commissions almost unanimously confirm inadequate qualifications and effectiveness. International performance comparisons point to shortcomings, although the arguments differ. Higher education reformers want instruments to implement international aspects to a greater extent - in line with the Bologna Declaration.There is agreement on the need for reform. Other issues such as the impact, intensity and sustainability of teaching and learning at universities (not only in teacher training), the implementation of national and international teacher training concepts, the connection between teacher training and learning outcomes at school or the need to pay more attention to practical aspects of professionalization prove to be essential. The article is intended as a personal examination of one's own work in teacher education.
