Colonial State and Urbanisation in Sokoto Metropolis, C. 1903-1960 A.D. by A. A. Sifawa is a record of facts and analysis on colonial enterprise in Nigeria... The book demonstrates an interesting paradox in urbanization drive during the British administration of Sokoto. Whereas, the face and speed of British policies in the provision of infrastructure and social services were materially motivated, the responses of the Sokoto town's people were ideologically driven. It showcases an interesting, though silent, but dodged clash of two varying civilizations. The book, there is no doubt, is a must read by students of colonialism all over the world and Africa in particular. It is meant for both scholars and the general public. It was written with this consideration and in a Language lucid, accessible and intelligible to all. I, therefore, wish to recommend it to all. Prof. H.M. Maishanu
