This book discusses the critical events and discoveries that dominated the development of firearms, from the introduction of gunpowder to the West in 1258 to 1877. Remarkably, it reveals for the first time the Great Smith & Wesson Patent Hoax that made them a fortune and the means by which Colt later turned the tables and saved the company from financial ruin. The patent was the famous Rollin White Patent for the breech-loading revolver which, in their hour of desperation, Smith & Wesson declared that it "stinketh," for it was naught but a "corpse of an abortion of an invention."
