"Combat Mess" is the personal account of Food Service Sergeant Fist Class, Derrick Mitchell's multiple combat deployments to the Middle East. His vividly recreated combat encounters inform readers what it is like to endure explosions leading to traumatic brain injury (TBI), and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). SFC Mitchell credits prayer, music, and a stuffed animal gift from his daughter, as "anchors" of stability and security during sleepless nights in combat. As with many Soldiers, SFC Mitchell's adjustment to his "new self" following TBI and PTSD, and the challenges of returning to a "new home" were as stressful as one can imagine. Despite his "100% Disability" rating by the military, he expended the time and effort to become a certified Veteran Assistant. His slow and difficult journey to healing is attributed to help other combat veterans. A significant contribution of Combat Mess is devoted to precise, step-by-step resources to ably assist combat veterans.
