Come On Now You Got This is about a teenage girl named Marian who is experiencing a great deal of suffering from the death of her mother. The book starts with her sharing briefly how she became aware of her mother's illness. After learning of her illness, she has a brief time to adjust to the news and then her mother's death. She shares her questioning of unanswered prayers to God as well as a few funny things that happened while attending her mother's funeral. Through it all, Marian kept saying to herself, "Come on now, you got this. You got this." At home, yes. At school, no. At home, Marian would not show her siblings or her father all her emotions; however, when around her friends, it was a different story. When Marian returned to school, things were different. "Come on now, you got this" didn't seem to work. Her mother's death changed her. Changed her to the point that her friends were afraid that unless she got help and talked about the death of her mother, she would do something harmful to herself or have an emotional breakdown. What Marian went through was tragic. She takes her tragedy and turns it around to help others. Not just her peers but her family members. She did this by sharing with her friends that she is not managing the death of her mother, it's extremely hard. When she starts to share her grief, suffering and other teenage issues, she notices something, other people start sharing with her their own experiences. Marian came up with the idea of starting a Support Group in the school. After several meetings with the principal, she received approval to start the group. Out of this group, so many things are revealed. Support was needed for those who were suffering from abuse, bullying, sexual assault, rejection, grief and a few other issues these teenagers were facing that even some adults would have a hard time handling. From this group, a "family of friendships and trust" is formed. The takeaway of this book is for teenagers to speak up and speak out. Don't suffer in silence! There is always someone around or available who will listen, get the help that is needed, support and try to find solutions to the issues and problems. The key is "You don't have to suffer alone." This book is Not Only For Teenagers but for you also. If you have ever suffered the loss of a loved one or a friend (like I have) and can't seem to move on, consider some of the things that Marian went through. You see, on the other side of her pain, she was able to help others and, you can and will too. With God on your side, you can accomplish the impossible! Come on now you got this. Yes, You Got This!
