An overwhelming majority of all mental health problems are dealt with exclusively in primary care settings. This text prepares practitioners working in primary care mental health to help and support patients with common mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, panic, agoraphobia, stress, sleep problems and anger. It takes a stepped care approach, as recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence, emphasising low-intensity interventions, collaborative care case management and self-help. Common Mental Health Problems in Primary Care introduces the idea of mental healthcare in a primary care context, outlines specific models of working in primary care including collaborative and enhanced care models and acquaints the reader with information about the phenomenology and epidemiology of common mental health problems. It explores the most useful and evidence-based techniques used when working with this group of people, including pharmacological interventions and their management, behavioural activation, working with thoughts, sleep hygiene, prolonged exposure, exercise, diet and nutrition, relaxation, signposting and case management. Common Mental Health Problems in Primary Care: A Stepped Care Approach will be invaluable for all workers in primary care, with an emphasis on those responsible for primary care mental health including, graduate primary care mental health workers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and occupational therapists.
