Due to increasing concern over environmental damage fossil fuel consumption is causing on a global scale, alternative methods of energy and power production are being researched and implemented. This study focuses on transitional fuel types and technologies and their implementation in the real world to determine whether they are economically, commercially, and politically attractive options. This includes nuclear power, renewable technology such as hydro, wind, and solar PV. It also analyses the oldest transitional fuel natural gas in power generation and a new technology type underground coal gasification which currently holds great potential for producing cheap and clean energy. These fuel sources are analyzed initially on their techno-economic feasibility. Then sectoral risks are examined and investor trends are explained to determine the commercial attractiveness of a project and access to cheap capital. Further analysis is conducted into policy requirements of a nation from a fuel type and how these fuel sources fit those requirements. The interplay of these micro to macro factors is evaluated to determine single project viability.
