Education, for Filipinos, is a highly coveted goal. There is a widespread belief among the masses that education can pave the way out of poverty (Gillian, 2009). People in this country would go to great lengths just to send their children to school and be equipped for a career that would hopefully make their lives better. The regard for education in this country is very high as reflected by its staggering 97 percent literacy rate for both male and female combined (United Nations Children's Fund [UNICEF], 2011) In some households in the Philippines, the level of education attained by family members would be flaunted by reserving the biggest spot on their walls for a diploma next to either a crucifix or an over-sized replica of wooden eating utensils (Sta. Romana-Cruz & Llana, 1997).
