The present study suggests that as the oxidative stress increases with the duration & with number of smoking and there is a progression in atherosclerosis. The levels of malondialdehyde, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol and VLDL- cholesterol are significantly higher in healthy smokers, IHD with smoking and IHD without smoking in comparison to normal healthy control whereas the levels of superoxide dismutase antioxidant enzyme and HDL- cholesterol were significantly lowered in the patients of healthy smokers, IHD with smoking and IHD without smoking. The levels of MDA (representing lipid peroxidation) showed significant increase with the decrease in SOD levels. All the observation suggested that smoking plays a very important role in the pathogenesis of Ischemic heart disease by disturbing the lipid profile and raising the oxidative stress in the body.
