The reality of business is that increasing anddynamic natural, technological and human inducedthreats, business complexity, government regulation,corporate governance requirements, and media andpublic scrutiny demand a comprehensive and integratedapproach to business crisis and continuity management(BCCM). Given the lack of a widely accepted frameworkfor an enterprise wide BCCM program with anunderstanding of functional relationships and aninventory of the program specific competenciesnecessary for effective job performance, programsuccess can be left to chance in spite of the noblestintentions. This manuscript describes the researchmethods and the findings that contribute to theunderstanding of the organizational functionssupporting the management of disruptive (crisis)events and the continuity of operations, the interdependencies of these functions, and a prioritizedinventory of competencies required by an executivelevel individual and/or organizational unitresponsible for coordinating the functions into acomprehensive and integrated program supporting theentire organizational enterprise.
