The study of metal complexes of pharmaceutical compounds is an important area of research. It finds widespread application in the field of chemical, biochemical, medicinal and pharmacological science due to the synergistic action of the drug and the activity of the metal ion for enhanced activity. A trend in the field of medicinal inorganic chemistry has been towards molecularly targeted, metal-based drugs obtained by functionalizing complexes with biologically active ligands. There is a growing interest in metal-containing drugs, and medicinal inorganic chemistry covering applications of metals in therapeutics and diagnostics is a field of increasing prominence. The field of complexation study in medicine may be conveniently divided into two main categories, i) drugs (ligands) which target metal ions in some form and ii) metal-based drugs and imaging agents where the central metal ion is usually the key feature of the mechanism of action. This book make it an ideal reference work for all undergraduate, postgraduate and research students of chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy and related principles working in the field of "metallodrugs" or "metallopharmaceuticals".
