Blood is a living tissue which should be donated only on the sprit of altruism. Donation of blood or blood products can be as good as life saving while its mis-used can very dangerous to the human health. Components therapy plays an important in the therapeutic medicine. blood and blood products have never been more in demand in African continent than it is today. Escalating elective surgery, shortage arising from a fall in supply, old and emerging threat of transfusion transmissible infection and coast due to various safety introductions have all conspired to ensure that allogenic blood remains very much a vital but limited assess in health care delivery in most setting in sub-saharan Africa(SSA). Provision of safe and effective blood transfusion services in Africa is plagued by a number of challenges; high incidence rate of transfusion transmissible infection, absence of a functional national blood transfusion services, reliance on commercial remunerated and family replacement donors, education, cultural and awareness related challenges associated with blood donation, transfusion of whole blood rather than components therapy are among the challenges facing blood donations.
