The present research aims to understand the process of processing petitions for the confirmation of Indian encomiendas in the Royal and Supreme Council of the Indies between 1630 and 1655. For this purpose, we conducted a case study of five files that are currently in the General Archive of the Indies and that come from the Royal Court of the Kingdom of Chile. Based on this objective, we got to know the people and institutions that intervened in the process of granting an encomienda, we followed up on the regulations that governed the system and we analyzed from the point of view of Diplomacy the constituent documents of the files that were necessary for the grant to be subsequently confirmed in the Council of the Indies. Likewise, we complete the work with the edition and transcription of those files, with the purpose of making known and giving value to those historical sources.

With a degree in History from the Universidad Austral (Chile) and a Master's degree in Documents and Books, Archives and Libraries from the University of Seville (Spain), the author is an expert in the areas of documentary and bibliographic heritage, especially in Indian documents and in disciplines associated with Americanist history, archival science and paleography.
