The issue presented in this paper starts with the prerequisite that economic research and various studies find and support that development of metropolitan area generates economic growth, population increase in the influenced area, creation of new jobs and also contributes to the development of local communities as key drivers of economic and social balance. In case of Romania, addressing the "metropolitan-type" economic development, in order to resolve the internal economic and social problems and to support the country's efforts to reduce development disparities versus the developed countries, can be a challenge but may also work as an alternative beneficial for all stakeholders (central and local decision makers, state-owned or private companies, civil society etc.). The enunciated approach takes into account the positive economic situation at the end of 2016 and the confident forecasts for upcoming years in contrast to some internal and external risks.
