This book deals with the 20th century phenomenon called graphic novel. The aim of it is to justify that graphic novels belong to the real literature and they are beneficial for various kinds of students. The theoretical part consists of two chapters. The first chapter deals with definition of the term graphic novel, its genres, history and differences among graphic novels, comics and manga. Furthermore, it specifies basic techniques of representation used by graphic novels authors. The second chapter of the theoretical part mentions the reasons and benefits of using graphic novels in educational setting. It also copes with the description of teaching strategies for using graphic novels. The practical part of this thesis focuses on the analysis of three controversial graphic novels: Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, Pride of Baghdad written by Brian K. Vaughan and J.P. Stassen's Deogratias: A Tale of Rwanda. This part also discusses about these of graphic novels in the school environment and it also concludes lesson plans with the methodical material for high school students.
