Over the past few years, performance-based financing (PBF) has made it possible to establish a financing model that maximizes returns for the poorest. But PBF doesn't stop there: it's a system that empowers communities and patients alike. Moreover, the PBF approach demands a high degree of involvement from all parties, whether health professionals, government, healthcare institutions or communities.Performance-Based Financing (PBF) is a results-based health financing strategy, based on a contractual relationship between the various players in the health system, and differs from traditional input financing, in which health care structures receive all the inputs they need to function without any obligation to achieve results (PNDS, 2016-2020). In general, the application of performance-based financing requires profound changes and therefore needs a carefully managed process of awareness-raising, stakeholder information, coaching and training at all levels of the healthcare system.
