The National Republican Guard (GNR) is a security force of a military nature, composed of soldiers organized into a special body of troops and endowed with administrative autonomy, with jurisdiction throughout the national territory and the territorial sea. The GNR depends on the Ministry of Defense and Internal Administration. In normal situations, the GNR executes typical police missions, as well as military missions within the scope of national defense, in cooperation with the Armed Forces. In situations of state of emergency or siege, the GNR is the most appropriate force to act in problematic situations and in the transition between the Police and the Armed Forces. In case of war, due to its military nature, the GNR can, alone or as a complement, perform a very wide range of missions of the Armed Forces, as is the case of those provided in a theater of war in the context of the commitments made by Portugal to international organizations.
