Coach Joe North dedicated 39 years to teaching and coaching basketball at the high school and middle school level. He compiled an overall record of 853-239 at high schools in Bells, Bolivar, Crockett County, Adamsville, Dyersburg, North Side and Trinity Christian Academy. He coached middle schools at Michie, Adamsville and University School of Jackson. He also taught U.S. and World History. In an interview with NewsTalk 101.5 when he was inducted into the Madison County Sports Hall of Fame in 2019, Coach North explained that he moved to various schools because he was "always looking for a new challenge." Changing schools also showed him that "my coaching style and discipline is transferable to all kids and schools." Coach North attended Ramer High School in McNairy County, Tennessee, graduating in 1969. He graduated from Lambuth College in 1974 and earned his master's degree from Memphis State in 1982. He married his wife Nancy in 1982, and they have two daughters, Stephanie Cross and Shannon Schuler. His grandson is Hunter Cross, who has two bands, Skeleton Krew and the Hunter Cross Band. Today, Coach North devotes himself to helping his grandson with his music and with his record shop in downtown Jackson.
