Claire Ellender's third monograph, 'Coping with Comedy in Audiovisual Translation: Subtitling Humorous Representations of Otherness in Films', focuses on a number of comedy films which were produced in France, Great Britain and the United States between 1998 and 2016 and whose humour centres on diverse representations of otherness. This study seeks to demonstrate that, despite the many and varied translation challenges which the chosen body of comedies presents, the work of the films' respective subtitlers globally succeeds at making these films and their particular humour accessible to audiences of another language and culture. Through their work, the subtitlers therefore enable humour to be shared, and a greater understanding of otherness to be achieved, beyond linguistic and cultural borders.
