The 2000 census found 13,641 people in the township. It is the only Copley Township statewide. Purchased by William Gardiner in 1807, Copley was originally named Greenfield. The area was first settled by Jonah Turner in 1814 and became a township in 1819. The name Copley was given to the area in honor of William Gardiner's father-in-law John Singleton Copley. In 1980, the Northeastern section of Copley voted to separate and form the Village of Fairlawn.
