Dental implants placement is the trending restorative therapy among dentist now-a-days and it has become a routine dental procedure. Basal Implantology is a modern Implantology approach that engages the basal cortical bone for achieving retention of the implant. It is also called as Bicortical Implantology as it provides excellent bicortical anchorage. Basal implants can be placed avoiding critical structures like the inferior alveolar nerve in the mandible and also gain anchorage by utilizing the pterygoid plates in the maxilla to achieve excellent primary stability. Whenever robust surgical procedures are involved (conventionally), basal implants come to the rescue. Sometimes the best solutions are found in the unconventional. An adequate knowledge of bone physiology, implant placement protocol, implant design, single-stage implant surgery, and immediate loading of implants with analytical approach is must for the success of basal implants as treatment modality. This dissertation discusses about the literature of using basal implants and the differences that exist between basal implants and crestal implants in rehabilitation of atrophied edentulous jaws.
