Jacen Manson is a 'well-paid' junior doctor… once he's added up the excessive hours. He grapples with the conundrums of balancing his career with love and a 'normal' life. Beds are few, clinics are full, waiting lists are long and human nature remains as bizarre as ever… the National Health Service in the 1990's might as well be in 2020! Exhausted and cynical, he's learning the arts of insomnia and emotional anaesthesia from Doctor Fiona Feelwell, his more senior, streetwise colleague. Jacen increasingly brands newfound levels of sarcasm and dark humour upon everything and everyone, including Doctor Davinder 'Dave' Dewani, his naïve junior sidekick; nothing less than a rite of passage. Living at constant breaking point is not an easy state… so needs must, though emotional baggage storage is rather limited… as is a regular toilet break. Camaraderie serves as a synonym for salvation. Why not join the team? "Based on a true story… a moving, confronting and vivid depiction… of the hazardous lives of junior doctors… and the emotional turmoil that ensues." Ruth Reed - International Reviewer and Focused Patient

Maximilian van den Boss is the pseudonym of a Consultant in the National Health Service in the UK. He is now a respected specialist in his field of practice and he has published extensively in the medical literature in the form of research papers and book chapters. This book is rather different.
