In 1978 Joy created the "McDonald's Hands on Business Training Program" which became the world-wide training program for McDonald's Restaurants and has had a positive impact on many, many people throughout the years. She was Inspirational in confronting the physical and medical challenges she faced, and Joy has left a lasting mark through her compassion and support for others. Her story is a firm reminder to never give up, no matter what the odds.

Rick Karp was a high school teacher for 14 years, in business for close to 30 years, and was president of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce for several years. Now retired, he is currently president of the Jewish Cultural Society of Yukon and a member of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce. He volunteers at the local hospital, is a local and national business mentor, and is part of the Whitehorse writer's community. Rick wants to show people, like Joy did, that when we put our minds to achieving something, we can do it. He is a firm believer in teaching people how to rely on our abilities and strengths to overcome issues and help others. A consummate storyteller, he has published two other books with FriesenPress: Green's Discovery (2020) and Green's Discovery 2 (2022). After Joy's passing, Rick lives in Whitehorse with his two wonderful cats.
