The author went to work at the coal mine from leaving school. Later he worked underground specialising in mines ventilation. He was a member of the Mines Rescue Service. He was himself involved in a near-fatal accident which involved a difficult rescue. David Coleman performs a live entertainment show, dressed in pit gear and smeared with coal dust, in which he demonstrates small pieces of mining equipment and tells stories of pit life.
