Loan portfolio is the largest asset and key source of income of financial institutions including credit unions. Poor adherence to and application of good credit management standards has resulted in failure of some financial institutions. Credit unions do face similar problems. The main objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the loan portfolio management strategies of selected community co-operative credit unions in the Northern Region of Ghana. The study identified the challenges in the loan portfolio management practices of the credit unions and recommended actions to correct the weaknesses in the system.
