This book examines the problem of development in Africa. In order to illuminate efforts at discussing the crisis, it considers and explains the concepts of underdevelopment and development, senses or dimensions of development, distinction between negative development and positive development, and the distinction between quantitative and qualitative aspects of development. The book situates the examination of the problem of development in Africa within the contexts of what operates within and outside the continent. Internally, Africa has had to contend with inept political leadership, shortage of capital, non-integrated economies, high rates of illiteracy, population and unemployment as well as economic backwardness, among other things. Externally, the following phenomena have served as fetters to the development and progress of the continent: lop-sided international economic order, neo-colonialism, membership of some international organizations such as the World Bank and I.M.F.byAfrican countries. The book discusses some of these dimensions of the crisis of development in Africa and proffers some solutions to them. The book is valuable to politicians, teachers and students.
