As of 2000, the population was 9,384. Its county seat is Marion. The county is named for John J. Crittenden who was Governor of Kentucky 1848-1850. It is a prohibition or dry county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 371 square miles (961 km2), of which 362 square miles (938 km2) is land and 9 square miles (23 km2) is water.
