Jean-Philippe Platteau is Professor of Economics and Director of CRED (Centre for Research in the Economics of Development) at the University of Namur, Belgium. Robert Peccoud, a sociologist, is Director of the Research Department at Agence Française de Développement (AFD), Paris.
