Edmondo De Amicis, geb. 1846, schloss sich mit neunzehn Jahren dem Freikorps Garibaldis an, nahm 1866 am Krieg gegen Österreich teil, wurde Militärschriftsteller, gehörte zu den ersten, die 1870 in Rom einzogen, bereiste als Journalist unter anderem Südamerika (wohin so viele Italiener auswanderten), wurde aus Überzeugung Mitglied der sozialistischen Partei, schrieb militärgeschichtliche, länderkundliche und pädagogische Artikel und Bücher, die ihn populär machten, hatte seine größten Erfolge mit Erzählungen für ein jugendliches Publikum, vor allem mit dem Buch 'Cuore'. Er starb 1908
