The manuscript is a well argued case for giving even more attention to the curricula that our children study during their school education. Using a constructivist approach he seeks to show how curriculum design is a key tool in the creation of educational experiences that will enhance individuals and the societies. Xhomara's work outlines the body of knowledge in relation to curriculum design and academic performance in general and more particularly in the case study areas of literacy, maths and science. His research shows the differentiation between the high ranking OECD European countries and low ranking countries. Future research should investigate the relationship between academic performance and differing teaching and learning variables in all three study areas as the differences in achievements between low and high ranking countries seems difficult to solely attribute to teaching time allotted, although it is clear that this has some effect.
