His father Billy Swan played 302 games with Port Melbourne and Williamstown from 1976 1993. He grew up playing junior football for the Westmeadows Football Club in the Essendon District Football League, and attended St. Bernard's College in Essendon before playing his under 18 football with the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup
