John Davies was born into a mining family in Cwmafan, Port Talbot, in 1948. The youngest of six children, John attended Glanafan Grammar School and worked as a chemist at BP Chemicals, Baglan Bay for over thirty years. He has been happily married to Adrianne since 1971. They have one son, Ian, who is happily married to Tina, and they have three children, Freya, Ayla and Osian. A keen sportsman, John was Welsh Master's javelin champion for many years. Currently, he is a trustee, life member and president of Port Talbot Harriers. He is also a Welsh Athletics qualified track and field judge and race referee. John started writing for children when his granddaughter, Freya, was born in 2010. He intends to carry on writing in this genre because it suits his childish nature!
