As a "transhistorical phenomenon" (Scholl), the Grotesque forms the basis for bridging the 17th to the 21st century and Spanish to Latin American literature. It is particularly the Grotesque in Spanish literature - less frequently explored by more recent literary research - that can provide many compelling examples for innumerable epochs and movements throughout literary history. This volume contains case studies from the Spanish Siglo de Oro (Golden Century) up to contemporary Latin American literature. The Grotesque treads beyond the borders of genres and rules of artistic forms to express societal changes and diminishing certitudes in both a playful and critical way. Primary consideration is given to linguistic works of art, whilst relationships to stage, illustration and film are explored as well.
