He was class president and was an All-state basketball player at Irving Crown High School. Upon graduation from Crown in 1970 he was recruited to play basketball for the United States Naval Academy. He graduated from Annapolis in 1974, and served in the Navy for the next 28 years. He commanded USS John Hancock and later led Destroyer Squadron 50, based in Bahrain. He also served as Chief of Staff to the Commander of the Sixth Fleet in Gaeta, Italy. After being promoted to Rear Admiral, Stone headed NATO''s Mediterranean naval forces in support of peacekeeping in Kosovo. Following several tours of duty in the Pentagon, Stone was commander of the USS Nimitz battle group.
