SAMUEL VON PUFENDORF (1632-1694) was a German jurist and political philosopher who studied law at the University of Leipzig. In 1660 he published Elementa Jurisprudentiae Universalis, which synthesized the ideas of Grotius and Hobbes, melding the law of nations and nature. His influence was profound and guided the great philosophers Blackstone and Montesquieu.
