Oscar Wilde, geboren 1854 in Dublin, kam nach dem Studium am Trinity College in Dublin sowie in Oxford mit 25 Jahren nach London. Er war der verwöhnte Liebling der Londoner Gesellschaft, doch seine Freundschaft mit Lord Alfred Douglas wurde ihm zum Verhängnis: Wegen Homosexualität wurde er zu zwei Jahren Zuchthaus verurteilt. Nach der Entlassung lebte Wilde, dem Alkohol verfallen, in Italien und Frankreich und starb 1900 in Paris.

Er ist so wild
in seinem Herzen
Ein Dandy entdeckt die Demut – und den Kummer als „Urform und Prüfstein aller großen Kunst“. Allein schon das macht Oscar Wildes berühmten Brief „De Profundis“, den er aus dem Gefängnis von Reading an seinen vormaligen Geliebten Lord Alfred Douglas schrieb, zu einem besonderen und biografisch faszinierenden Stück Prosa. Aber auch stilistisch, historisch und allgemein menschlich ist diese künstlerische (Selbst-)Reflexion und Rekapitulation eines Lebens groß und bewegend. Wilde schrieb den Brief 1897 am Ende seiner zweijährigen Haft. Verurteilt wegen homosexueller „Unzucht“, hatte er Einzelverwahrung und harte Zwangsarbeit durchlitten. Es war ein Absturz in die tiefste Tiefe, aus der heraus „De Profundis“ erschallt, Psalm 130 und vieles mehr aus der Bibel zitierend. „Aus der Tiefe“ heißt auf gut Deutsch die so geschmeidige wie griffige Neuübersetzung von Mirko Bonné. Ein guter Grund zum Erst- oder Wiederlesen. Das geht zu Herzen: Wilde at heart.
